The Return of Greyfriar’s Bobby
Greyfriar’s Bobby, the Skye terrier who guarded the grave of his owner, Old Jock, until his own death fourteen years later in 1872, seems to have been the inspiration for a nameless dog living in Panjiatun, China. The dog’s owner, Lao Pan, passed away, leaving his canine companion alone in the world. After the funeral, his dog commenced a constant devoted vigil, guarding his master until the end. Local villagers are now bringing the dog meals at the cemetery, and have started building him a kennel.
Till death do us part? Not on my watch.
The fact that there’s at least two dogs out there capable of doing this does provide valuable insights into the canine mind.
