This week saw Katherine Kelly receive a National Television Award for her portrayal of Becky McDonald in the British soap, Coronation Street. Becky McDonald originally entered the street six years ago as a petty thief. However, her hard exterior protected a heart of gold, which shone through when she was taken under the wing of the local café owners, Roy and Hayley. With their foster parenting, Becky turned her back on a life of hard drink, drugs and thieving and worked hard to become a permanent fixture in the local community. Her feisty and unflinching loyalty to her adopted parents, and her good intentions have won her the hearts of millions of viewers across the country. Throughout all her trials, tribulations and hardship, Becky MacDonald always survived and fought back in the face of adversity.
Katherine Kelly’s portrayal of Becky has always captivated audiences, no less so than during Becky’s grand exit from the soap last week. Katherine Kelly is currently starring in the National Theatre’s production of She Stoops to Conquer, which opens in London on Monday.
